The BEST Outdoor Workouts in YYC!

Summer is here, bring on the outdoor workouts!

We are all about moving our bodies in a variety of ways, that's why we get so excited when it warms up enough for us to incorporate some outdoor workouts in! There are so many amazing places in Calgary to move your body, we are going to list our favourites, and we would love to hear yours! Maybe we will even see you out and about in the next couple of weeks!

1. Memorial Stairs: These stairs are by far our favourite form of outdoor movement in YYC. I went to Crescent Heights High School, so I grew up incorporating these stairs into my workout routine. I even challenged myself to do 20 sets in an hour. Sadly I got 1:04 and didn't want to try again that year but maybe this will be the year for me. If you haven't had a chance to check these bad boys out take them slow, if you do too many too soon you won't be able to walk for a week. 2. River Run: If running isn't for you good news, walking at a brisk pace is a really beneficial form of movement and you get the bonus of being outside and near the river, which will expose you to negative ions (head to this post to learn why negative ions are so important for your health).

3. Scotsman's Hill: This is another set of stairs but I promise it's worth it. You are close enough to East Village that you can do a nice warm-up jog, hit up the stairs, and then finish off with some core work on the grass looking out over our amazing city. It's such a beautiful view and if you get there for sunset it is truly breathtaking. Let your body move freely in this workout and just enjoy our summer weather with a friend.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you are planning on getting outside for your workout:

  1. Pick the right time: The Memorial Stairs are packed during peak times (lunch especially), so if you can go when they are less busy they are way more enjoyable. It is also way more enjoyable if you go earlier in the morning or later in the day so you aren't getting baked by the sun.

  2. Sun protection: If you are going when it's super hot make sure to dress appropriately, wear loose, light clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc. and make sure you are staying super hydrated. Love on that body by giving it the support it needs to thriiv.

  3. Have fun with it: This is your opportunity to get outside and move your body, don't feel like you have to go crazy hard for every outdoor workout. A nice walk or some simple core exercises after your stairs are a great way to move your body but not burn it out, especially if you are incorporating our workouts throughout the week, your body will need time to rest and reset.
